GNOME.Asia Summit: April 2 - 3 2011, Bangalore, India

Talk Abstract
Topic: OLPC future concept of real time classroom management system in rural India

We believe education is the most critical issue which creates the foundation for the other UN Millennium Development Goals. Without education how can we ever hope for improved incomes and economic growth? How can we hope for better child and maternal health while the current population is unequipped to think about, let alone solve, such critical issues? Only through education can we hope for a thoroughly sustainable environment and find ways to combat diseases which have plagued third world nations and claimed countless lives.
“Most of the nearly two–billion children in the developing world are inadequately educated, or receive no education at all. One in three does not complete the fifth grade.” - UNESCO Statistics 2009 Since 2002, the OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) program, a non-profit organization, has been set up to oversee the creation of an affordable educational device for use in the developing world. Its mission is “to create educational opportunities for the world’s poorest children by providing each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop with content and software designed for collaborative, joyful, self-empowered learning.” Our intention is that local governments and NGOs will use our solution to broadcast educational material, specifically native language content which is currently lacking in these remote areas. Additionally, our system can be used to raise awareness and provide solutions to tackle some critical health issues such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and typhoid. This method is low-cost; we are being realistic, we know it’s not broadband. But it’s not a requirement that the transmission must be fast. The transfer takes places in the background. So we should consider that children are not market they are mission.
